Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter in their family. Her father, a carnival barker, died as a young child, forcing her mother to help support her family through work as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth grew up in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. She left school after two years in order to study acting. The route she took did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed for was not available. Her next job was as an "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and returned to Boston. She was an usherette in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first acting position that was permanent. Drama studies led her to earn her degree in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
